Climate Governance Initiative, the Malaysian Chapter

Updated: May 24, 2019

16 May, 2019 - Aleevar Consulting was invited to attend the launch of the Malaysian Chapter of the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) which was held at the Securities Commission. CGI is a project hosted by Climate Governance Malaysia aligned to the guiding principles proposed by the World Economic Forum's Climate Governance on Corporate Boards, and Malaysia is proudly being the first Asian country to do so. In her opening note, Datin Seri Sunita Rajakumar, founding member of the Malaysian Chapter said that CGI is an effort to reach out specifically to non-executive directors of public-listed companies to inform, engage with, and develop responses on how businesses should address longer-term risks of climate change.

Renewable energy is the future

In officiating the launch, the Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change, and Environment, Yeo Bee Yin, reiterated the ministry’s mission to promote a green industry through various incentives and initiatives. These include providing green investment tax allowance for green technology equipment purchases, giving commitment to reduce 45% of carbon emission intensity by 2030 as per Paris Agreement in 2015 and building a framework for RE100. RE100 is a global corporate leadership initiative to bring together influential businesses committed to 100% renewable power. Earlier in his keynote, Nick Bridge, the Special Representative of the British Government on Climate Change, mentioned that the UK had set a long-term goal for decarbonising its economy and took responsibility to reach what would be a global average carbon footprint for each citizen.

Aleevar’s Perspectives:

Aleevar is of the opinion that such effort is not the sole responsbility of the government and its agencies alone but requires also the collective effort by each and everyone of us in making personal contribution towards reducing our personal climate footprint. By doing this collectively, we are already becoming a part of global movement of action on climate change. We believe citizens have a significant potential in reducing carbon emissions, phasing-out fossil fuels, and switching to clean energy. The will power is with us.
