3 August 2019 - The Ministry of Health (MOH) in collaboration with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) has successfully organised the 9th International Conference on Traditional and Complementary Medicine (INTRACOM) 2019 at One World Hotel, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The theme for this year’s 9th INTRACOM was Integrated Approach Towards Healthy Ageinghas attracted more than 400 participants with more than 10 international speakers from China, India, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, UK, Germany, Serbia, Turkey, UAE and Australia, and including Malaysia. The speakers were representatives from various Governments, World Health Organization (WHO), Hospitals, Universities, and Non-Profit Organisations.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, Malaysia’s Minister of Health who spoke about the opportunity in the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM), which is worth about US$127 billion (RM529 milion) a year globally. By the year of 2035, 15% of Malaysia’s population will be 60 years old and above. Both modality treatment of modern medicine and T&CM will be sought after globally. The market size of Malaysia’s T&CM is valued at about RM8 billion in revenue to date and was growing at the rate of 15% annually.
In the opening speech, MOH’s Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, the director general of MOH, cited that trend of uberisation of healthcare is taking shape where patients will have instant access to healthcare and be able to book a house call from a doctor rather than having to come to clinics and hospitals for test, treatment orheart auscultation through electronic stethoscope.
E-Stethoscope or Stethee, is a stethoscope that you could place against your chest to record the sounds produced by your heart and lungs and beam them to the nearest smart device. Meanwhile the harmonisation of T&CM and modern medicine has the potential to co-exist but with the support of evidence-based research to ensure the quality and safe delivery of healthcare service to public.
Dr. Goh Cheng Soon, Director of the T&CM division of MOH conveyed her aspiration for T&CM to be delivered in a safe and responsible manner, by regulating the sector with the introduction of T&CM Act 2016 (ACT 775) that governs the T&CM practices and practitioners domestically.
